Shepparton Golf Club’s men’s A-grade Club Championship title was decided in thrilling fashion at the weekend.
Daniel Adem and Luke Dixon went toe-to-toe for 36 holes on Sunday, attracting a huge crowd by the time the former settled himself over what would become a match-winning birdie putt on the final green.
Adem had taken the early ascendancy after seven holes with back-to-back birdies, but Dixon’s power off the tee was on full display on the next to peg one back.
A number of even holes followed as the pair continued to match each other at most turns, but Adem again edged two in front with another birdie on the 11th.
Not to be outdone, Dixon reeled his opponent back to parity with wins on the 13th and 17th holes.
Adem rose to the challenge immediately though, whipping out his supreme putting skills on the 18th to go one-up at the halfway point of the contest — a distinct foreshadowing of what was to come.
Dixon did his best to take the crown away from his clubmate on the third nine, moving to a two-hole lead of his own by the time the duo reached the tee on the 10th the second time around.
Adem was ready to pounce when Dixon went over the back on the 13th and found tree trouble on the 14th, setting the contest up for the grandstand finish it deserved.
The pair took one each of the 15th and 16th holes before breaking even on the penultimate green and, when both found themselves facing a birdie putt, with the championship on the line only one was able to sink their shot.
Dixon’s first putt just skirted the hole before he secured a par, but Adem was able to bathe in the applause of the big crowd after letting his putter do the talking once more.
●Kim Morris continues to prove to be an almost unstoppable force on the fairways and greens of Shepparton Golf Club.
Morris won yet another A-grade Women’s Club Championship on Sunday, comfortably defeating Marie Brown.
The title is Morris’ eighth in nine years, a massively dominant run of wins by any stretch of the imagination.
●Al Favaro defeated Chris Brewer in the men’s B-grade final, Bruce Fuller claimed the C-grade crown against Brett Mortison and Ian Bull was too steady over the journey for Gary D’Arma in the D-grade decider.
In the women’s lower grades it was Jacinta Harrington (B-grade) taking victory over Robyn Nind, Liz Gyles (C-grade) defeating Chris Hall and Helen Sleep (D-grade) getting the better of Donna Trickey in a tight final.
