Skinner makes sure Nathalia is a winner for first time

June 05, 2018

Netball talent Tamara Skinner has shown equal dominance on the football field, starring for Nathalia in its first win in the Northern Country Women's League against Mooroopna at the weekend.

Nathalia enjoyed its inaugural win in the Northern Country Women’s League, prevailing against Mooroopna in a game where it had all the sway.

But despite the Purples dominating possession, just eight points was the margin in the 1.12 (18) to 1.4 (10) victory.

Tamara Skinner has starred for Nathalia this year and was responsible for kicking her side’s sole goal in the final term, which helped pull the side over the line.

Although again fantastic, it was Vanessa Ward and Kirsty Hommes that made major impacts for the Purples, which managed seven scoring shots in the first half.

But Mooroopna was still a point ahead at half-time after a goal to Ameliah Bye.

But still Nathalia kept pressing, with their repeated attack earning them the hard-fought four points.

●Benalla and Shepparton produced one of the games of the season in a fantastic display of two of the established sides in the competition.

The Bears snared the first two goals of the game, but the Saints were just warming into the contest and also secured two of their own.

In the second term, the home side began to take hold at the Benalla Showgrounds thanks to Ally Reid, Alison Ballard and Jayde Burden.

But despite trailing by seven points at the main break there was no panic coming from the Shepparton rooms.

Jessie Barassi worked her magic and kept up her run on her way to two goals, while teammate Samantha Heron finished with three.

At the final change, the Bears were back in the lead and pressed on to a 6.10 (46) to 5.1 (31) win to sit at the top of the table.

Ash Thorneycroft and Rebecca Richards were also integral with good skills.

●Echuca was too strong for Rumbalara, with the Murray Bombers efficient as they took the chocolates 9.14 (68) to 1.3 (9).

The early stage of the game was even, but soon Echuca took hold against the inexperienced Rumba outfit.

The Murray Bombers had nine individual goal-kickers, but it was Jodie Lake, Leah Thompson and Sarah Goodsell who excelled for the winners.

Janarli Bux slotted through Rumbalara’s sole goal as Kathleen Sailor, Marissa Kerr and Wendy-Sue Atkinson battled hard all day.
