Central Goulburn Murray held its own at the Bowls Victoria Men’s Region Sides Championship at the weekend.
After the region’s women won five of their seven sectional matches at the corresponding women’s event, the men’s team had plenty to live up to on Traralgon Bowling Club’s greens.
CGM delivered in spades early on in the premier tournament, winning three of its first four games.
But with horrible weather conditions making bowling tough for all teams, CGM lost its next two clashes before the final contest was called off.
The 3-3 record placed CGM sixth in section B, but the region’s crowning glory for the weekend was certainly a tight victory against eventual overall champion Sandbelt.
CGM handed Sandbelt defeat in the fourth round of play, sneaking home 33-30.
Kilmore’s Scott Fletcher skipped his rink of Max Hammond (Seymour), Michael Szczykulski and Luke Spargo (both Seymour VRI) to a 13-9 win during the contest to lead the way for CGM.
Barooga Sports’ Ray Emerson (13-11) also claimed victory on his rink with the help of Steve Tatnall, Greg Dunn (both Cobram) and Joe Luci (Numurkah Golf), while recently appointed Shepparton Park coach Paul Nichols limited the damage enough in his 7-10 loss to help secure the overall triumph.
Kyabram’s David Cartwright, fellow new Parker Daniel Nichols and Shepparton Golf’s Col Power made up the rest of Nichols’ team.
The region also tasted success over Metro West (32-25) and Murray Mallee (33-28).
Emerson was CGM’s best-performed skipper with a shot difference of plus 13 for the tournament, followed by Nichols (-19) and Fletcher (-34).
