Two club stalwarts spurred Lancaster on to a memorable victory against Violet Town.
As Rikki Busch lined up for his 200th senior game alongside Chris Eddy, who brought up 150 games, the Wombats surged to defeat the reigning grand finalists 10.7 (67) to 7.6 (48).
The game was in the balance at three-quarter-time, with scores level at 34 apiece.
But Lancaster coach Corey Carver was buoyed by his side lifting to ensure Busch and Eddy were chaired off smiling.
‘‘There’s no greater incentive than winning a milestone game,’’ Carver said.
‘‘We were up because we had the two milestone games and put in that little bit extra effort and because of the weather and the tough contest, it helped get us over the line.’’
Lancaster kicked 5.3 in the final term in contrast to Violet Town’s 2.2, allowing the Wombats to bring up their second win for the season.
Drew Barrett was sensational and the Kyabram recruit has had no trouble fitting in to his new side.
‘‘Drew Barrett has been working really hard in offence and defence and Nathan Torney played well at centre half-back and the (new) other guys have fitted in well,’’ Carver said.
As always Pat and Sean Horsburgh stood up for Violet Town, with John Woodcock and Ryan Jennings also moving the ball well in the wet.
Carver said his side had to find other ways to win knowing the class of the Towners’ on-ball brigade.
‘‘They’ve got a really good midfield and we played some defensive roles on Pat and Sean and Sam Poole, but you can’t hold them down for too long, our back six were really good,’’ Carver said.
In his milestone match Eddy snared three goals to add to the nine he picked up in last weekend’s thrashing of Ardmona.
Sam Spedding and Zach Cerrone each chimed in with two goals, with the latter dominating the game.
