Benalla's Becky Webster was honoured to receive the Sporting Blue - a sought-after Victorian Sports award.

Benalla football star Becky Webster has won a prestigious Victorian Sports award — the Sporting Blue — thanks to amazing performances for the Murray Bushrangers and Victoria Country.

The Sporting Blue award is the highest sporting accolade presented in Victorian school sport.

The award ceremony was celebrated at the MCG last Thursday and the award was presented by Victorian Education Minister James Merlino.

The award recognises Webster for her dominant performances for the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup last year, where she was vice-captain of the undefeated team and made the All-Australian side.

She will now be co-captain of the team and aims to play for Victoria Country, where recruiters will be keeping a keen eye on her performances leading up to the October AFLW draft.

Webster received the award in front of proud family members, feeling all the emotions being celebrated on the iconic MCG.

‘‘It was a really proud moment and one that I’ll never forget. I am humbled to receive this award and it just gives me extra motivation leading into the season,’’ she said.

‘‘The moment was made even more special by having family and friends there to celebrate with me. Being on the MCG was such an amazing experience I am just thankful to everyone involved.’’

Benalla P-12 College acting assistant principal Rebecca Pell attended the ceremony and was incredibly proud to watch one of her students receive the honour.

‘‘It was a privilege to attend the awards ceremony with Becky and her family. I was very proud to see her up on stage and being recognised as amongst the best school athletes,’’ Pell said.

‘‘In addition to Becky being a talented and dedicated footballer, she is also an outstanding young person.

‘‘Becky is highly respected by her peers and staff at Benalla P-12 College. We can’t wait to see her drafted and taking the AFLW by storm in years to come.’’

Playing off half-back and recently moving into the midfield, Webster is renowned for her excellent decision-making and precise skills.

She started her junior footy playing for the Benalla Giants boys’ team until the under-14s, then moved to Mooroopna Cats for two years before being selected for the Murray Bushrangers.

She is constantly travelling across Victoria to get to games and recognises that she couldn’t do it without the support of her family.

‘‘My dad and gran have been instrumental in supporting me with everything I do. There is so much travel around the country and I couldn’t do it without them,’’ she said.

Webster is a member of the NAB National Academy which is the best 44 young players in the country.

She will juggle her commitments between the Bushrangers, Victoria Country and the academy, while also doing Year 12 at Benalla P-12 College.
