The junior Goulburn Valley Suns squads hosted strong South Melbourne FC outfits at McEwen Reserve at the weekend.

News photographer Julie Mercer was on hand to capture all the action in the under-12 fixture, in which the youngest Suns showcased their future potential.

In the under-13 match, the home side found the going tough against South Melbourne, going down 11-3 when the final whistle sounded.

Reece Reedy netted a speedy double for the Suns in the 55th and 59th minutes, while Hassan Al Hilfi (46th) also scored.

The under-14 clash went right down to the wire, but thanks to a Declan Kinnane hat-trick (in the 5th, 20th and 32nd minutes) and individual goals to Gabriel Wundit (11th) and Garang Kuol (50th), the Suns were able to take a narrow 5-4 victory.

Luke Mitchell found early success for the under-15 Suns with a goal in the fifth minute of proceedings.

But a strong push either side of the half from South Melbourne had the away side eventually taking a 4-1 triumph.

An early lapse had the under-16 Suns behind the eight-ball against their opponents, but the home team worked hard defensively to remain just one goal down at the break.

Another South Melbourne strike in the 54th minute though seemed to break the elastic in the contest, and allowed the visitors to storm to a 5-0 triumph.

The under-18 Suns went down by the same margin on McEwen’s second pitch after a fast start from both sides.

Anthony Damchev (8th minute) equalised the contest after an early South Melbourne goal, but it was to be the home side’s only ball past the away goalkeeper in a 6-1 defeat.
