Lightning flash way to start

A new pre-season round-robin competition will help teams prepare for the upcoming Northern Country Women's League campaign.

The details of a blockbuster Northern Country Women’s League pre-season competition have been confirmed.

A Lightning Premiership-style tournament between the now Goulburn Murray-based NCWL and the new Central Victoria Women’s Football League has been in the works for some time, and it was announced last week the extravaganza has been locked in.

Benalla, Echuca, Kerang, Mooroopna, Shepparton, Nathalia and Rumbalara (NCWL) will join with Bendigo Thunder, Kangaroo Flat, Kyneton, North Bendigo and Strathfieldsaye (CVWFL) in a round-robin event, where each team will be guaranteed at least three games (made up of two 12-minute halves).

Two sides will win their way through to the grand final and play for the inaugural ‘‘Mass Nutrition Cup’’.

‘‘This will be a great opportunity for our teams to compete in a new competition as a lead-in to the start of our season on April 29,’’ NCWL chairman Chris Thomas said.

‘‘It’s a new beginning for our league as a stand-alone league after the successes of last year and this competition will add another dimension for female football participation in the region.

‘‘We are also keen to keep a relationship with AFL Central Victoria, and coming together for a pre-season competition will be great for both leagues.

‘‘It will also be the first time that Nathalia and Rumbalara will compete under the league banner and I’m sure this will be an exciting day’s football as a great showcase for our teams and participants.’’

Rochester Recreation Reserve will host the tournament from 9.30am on April 15, with teams to use the event as solid preparation for round one of the regular season a fortnight later.
