Shepparton Gators under-18s boys team tested themselves against the best at last weekend’s country championships.
The side started with a narrow victory against Mildura Heat, just four points separating the sides at the end of the contest.
The Gators trailed by as much as seven points during the match before steadying to take out the game with a superb defensive effort.
But Shepparton struggled against Ballarat Miners, who came out victors despite the best efforts of Ethan Batey and James Brock.
The performances led the home side to a place in the division one competition on Sunday, where they exited at the hands of Geelong Supercats, 55-42.
Liam Dodd did his best to try and spur his side to victory with an outstanding 21 points, but the all-round strength from Geelong saw it win.
Shepparton Gators’ under-18s girls side was unable to secure a win during the competition with a match against Wodonga the best chance.
The Gators went down to the Wolves by one point in division two matches on Sunday as Ella Cirilli scored a match high 10 points for Shepparton.
