Life is all about new experiences for Shepparton Gators import Cameron Vines.
The American who hails from Columbus, Ohio, has taken up the opportunity to join the Gators and play in the Big V this season.
It is another style of basketball he will have to become accustomed to, after spending time at competitions across Europe.
Vines, 24, took to the court for Lanzarote, a Spanish team based in the Canary Islands.
Before then he was at BBC Bayreuth, Germany, based in the town most famous for being where composer Richard Wagner lived.
He is excited to come to Australia, as the new challenge gives the chance to bring his partner and young son with him.
After arriving two weeks ago, his partner Alexus and son Mason, 4, are hoping to arrive next month and Vines was sure they would enjoy Shepparton.
‘‘They’re getting nervous, I don’t think Mason is nervous, he’s running with the punches,’’ Vines said.
‘‘Alexus is nervous, she’s never been out of the country, so this is a new experience for her.
‘‘But she’ll love it, especially with there being no language barrier it’ll be easier for her to transition and the organisation (Greater Shepparton Basketball Association) is so family orientated and everyone looks after everyone, so she’ll love it.’’
The Gators have not played a practice match yet, so Vines is yet to see the different styles of play in Australia.
But off court, he has already had a chance to engage with the community.
‘‘In this type of situation you can do more than just play basketball, you can interact with the community and you can do things off the court like run clinics and things of that nature,’’ Vines said.
‘‘Where as in Europe you’re usually playing strictly basketball, you may do a clinic or two, but it’s primarily basketball practice and games, where as this one you can interact with the community.’’
Each chance to play basketball in a different country has added to his development.
‘‘Each (previous overseas) experience brought me something new, I loved everything,’’ Vines said.
‘‘A lot of people always ask me which is my favourite but I always tell people I don’t have a favourite, every experience brought me something new.’’
Vines graduated from St Joseph’s College in Indiana and played at Florida Southern.
Shepparton coach Leigh Bathman scouted him out after he stood out in footage from a Global Basketball League Summer camp in Last Vegas.
Bathman is pleased to have the 192cm combo guard as a key element of his defensive game plan in a new-look Gators this season.
Having soaked up some of the action at the Victoria Country Championships across the weekend, Vines is ready to jump in to life in the Goulburn Valley.
‘‘I’m just happy to be here, I’m ready for the experience and everyone has been great so far so I’m really optimistic about the situation,’’ he said.
