The Goulburn Valley Suns’ under-20s gave their new coach the perfect welcome present with a confident 3-2 win in the first round of the NPL2 season.
In Stuart Vance’s first game in charge of the GV youngsters, the Suns had no trouble playing free-flowing football and took their chances to grab a first-up win.
Brenton Urbaniak, Zac Hutchinson and Fraser Gosstray got on the scoresheet for the Suns as they avenged a final round defeat from last year.
Both sides scored early in the game with the score 1-1 25 minutes in.
From there, Goulburn Valley took control of the game, winning a penalty and having it duly converted for a 2-1 lead.
The Suns pushed on looking to do even more damage, but could not find a crucial third goal before the half, the scores unchanged as the teams hit the sheds.
But early in the second the Suns broke through for the crucial two-goal cushion 56 minutes in.
City pulled a goal back for 3-2 with 10 minutes left, but the Suns had enough to hang on and claim the three points.
The season rolls on for the GV with a round two game against Langwarrin on Saturday.
