Four enthusiastic Goulburn region players stepped onto the hallowed courts of Kooyong for the Alicia Molik Cup at the weekend.
The event for 12-and-under tennis talents always has fierce competition and this year’s tournament was no different.
The region’s side consisted of Shepparton’s Zach Ranson and Emily Turcato as well as Euroa’s Alanna Birch and Yarrawonga’s Fraser Bennett, who combined superbly.
A solid showing took the side all the way into the semi-final playoffs on Sunday, although Ranson was the only player able to break through and win his singles contest in the first match of the day.
A highlight of the weekend was Goulburn’s encounter against a strong East Gippsland on Sunday.
Turcato and Bennett joined together to battle through their set and win in a tiebreaker, while Ranson and Birch blitzed their opponents 6-1.
Birch and Turcato then went on to dominate singles proceedings to bring Goulburn the win.
Earlier at the weekend proceedings were more difficult as Goulburn region was assigned group matches against metro sides as well as Loddon Campaspe.
Goulburn tested Loddon Campaspe, but struggled against the experience of Waverley and North Eastern Junior Tennis Association.
But while being placed in a difficult pool, as always Goulburn region’s signature sportsmanship was on display.
