Gators set to sort imports

Shepparton Gators coach Leigh Bathman is hoping to soon announce two imports for next season.

Shepparton Gators are closing in on securing two imports for the next Big V Basketball season.

A few potential signings have been trialling for Leigh Bathman’s team and he hopes to announce the boom recruits soon.

‘‘It’s been great to see guys in the flesh before making a decision because in the past we’ve basically been going off phone calls and watching vision,’’ Bathman said.

‘‘We’re a bit restricted with our budget being a smaller country association, but the league has approved two imports for us and it’s about finding the right fit and skill set.

‘‘They need to be able to not only play well for us, but fit into the team and do those things like conduct junior clinics and after school programs; just fit into the Shepparton community in general.’’

Former league MVP and Gators captain Matt Bartlett has already announced his intentions to return after a year away playing football.

But also coming to Shepparton is former Bendigo Braves big man Jake Cowling.

Cowling played with Bartlett when the pair was at the Braves.

‘‘I’ll be moving across from Bendigo to Shepparton because I’ve got work there as a teacher at Orrvale Primary School,’’ Cowling said.

‘‘I’m just looking forward to a fresh new opportunity and continue to establish myself as a basketball player.

‘‘I can’t wait to start getting around the basketball community in Shepparton and seeing what I can offer.

‘‘I’ve had a few discussions with (Bathman) about my role and I’ll probably be playing the four or five spot and being up against those bigger bodies, crashing in hard on the rebound and helping the team win.’’
