Max shows smarts in bid to match the clock

December 05, 2017

Shepparton Runners Club held its annual Guestimator Race on the weekend with 10-year-old Max Carroll finishing one second off his predicted 5km time.

Run Max, run.

Max Carroll, 10, won the Shepparton Runners’ Club Guestimator Race after finishing one second quicker than his predicted pre-race 5km time trial.

Twenty-one runners competed in the technology free event with the aim of predicting your run time before racing.

Carroll finished with a time 24:10, while Mathieu Ryan, despite not being the slowest, finished last after beating his predicted time by three minutes.

‘‘It is a really good test, we usually run with technology and watches, so we always have a good indication of the time we are running, but this is more about pushing the body without the help of technology,’’ Ryan said.

‘‘Being on the committee we try and run the event every December and this time I thought I’d take a different approach, so I predicted a time a lot slower than I would usually run and it turns out I was no good.’’

Jason Hunter and Tom Avram came in second place with a two-second difference from their estimated times, but Carroll, who has been running for about six months, believes the trick to guessing the right time is keeping a steady pace.

‘‘I usually run around that time, so I just picked a similar time and held a very good pace,’’ Caroll said.

It was the first time the budding star had ran alone and heading into the event he was little nervous.

‘‘It was little bit nervous, but I knew if I just run normally I will be okay,’’ Carroll said.

The Shepparton Runners’ Club’s next handicap will be on Sunday, January 7 at the Princess Park clubrooms and Ryan was looking for newcomers to participate.

‘‘If anyone is interested in keeping fit and healthy we urge people to come down, have a run and see what all the fun is about,’’ Ryan said. ‘‘It doesn’t matter what level you’re at, everyone has to start somewhere.’’
