The Tongala Primary School grades five and six cricket team that will compete next week in the School Sport Victoria state cricket finals.

From Tongala to the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

It is many children’s dream to play on the hallowed turf and that is exactly where Tongala Primary School’s Year 5 and 6 girls cricket team will be heading today after a series of huge wins.

The team won its schools competition in Rochester before beating schools from Yarrawonga, Euroa and Wodonga in the regional round in Mooroopna on Tuesday last week, sealing a spot in School Sport Victoria’s state finals with a win against Shepparton’s Bourchier St.

Principal Rob Hogan said the team had taken down bigger schools on its way to the finals.

‘‘They’re heading down to the MCG and it’s a good achievement; we were against schools with 900 kids and we’ve only got 150 students,’’ he said.

‘‘They’ve been playing in the local under-12 competition and now the new local girls competition; they’re very keen about their cricket and doing extremely well.’’

Hogan put down the success to the girls’ love of the game.

‘‘They just love playing; they’re passionate and committed,’’ he said.

‘‘They train hard and get better, and they’re all really good friends. Being a smaller school, they socialise a lot and have great team camaraderie.

‘‘They play the right way and they’re very talented. The team won two games by more than 100 runs, and the closest game was the (regional) final, which they won by 40 runs.’’

A brilliant achievement, Hogan said the girls would head to the state finals to give it a red-hot go.

‘‘I’ve been in cricket for many years, and these girls are just so passionate. It’s a wonderful achievement for the girls and for the whole school,’’ he said.

‘‘They’re just excited to be going; when they found out yesterday they were chanting ‘M-C-G’.

Kids from Tonny don’t get down to Melbourne much let alone to one of the biggest stadiums in the world. The parents and teachers are just as excited as they are, and the girls will have a go and give it their best.’’
