Williams declines Bears job

November 23, 2017

Kyabram and Rochester premiership coach Dave Williams has rejected an offer to coach Shepparton next season.

Runner-up to Kyabram this season, the Goulburn Valley League Bears are still searching for a suitable replacement for Brad Campbell.

Rob McCartney was lined up to take over from Campbell, but he is moving back to Melbourne for a plum job at AFL club Hawthorn.

Williams said he spoke with Shepparton officials about taking on the job and was impressed with their professionalism.

But Williams said the fire was not in his belly at this stage to make a comeback to coaching.

‘‘The passion isn’t quite there at the moment and I’ve got some projects on at home I want to finish,’’ Williams said. The GVL Hall of Famer is given a lot of the credit for the Bombers’ revival into the most feared force in the league after a seven-year coaching stint up to 2014, which included a drought-breaking flag in 2013.
