A strong contingent of under-14 Shepparton Gators took to the courts of Wangaratta at the weekend with some outstanding results.
Both division one under-14 boys’ and girls’ teams won through to their respective grand finals, with the latter bringing home the ultimate glory.
The girls dominated the early stages of the weekend with a 30-19 victory against Yarrawonga-Mulwala followed by a 37-24 triumph against Echuca, but tasted defeat at the hands of Wodonga (20-30) in the third fixture.
It was then integral for Jason Bannerman’s troops to secure a large win in the fourth match, and that they did with a 40-13 drubbing of host Wangaratta.
A rematch with Wodonga awaited in the decider, but the girls were up to the task and took out their revenge with a 36-31 victory, playing the best basketball they have played to date.
The successful squad includes Nikiah Bamblett, Eliza Bicknell, Sofia DeRose, Holly Egan, Jasmine Huffer, Shelby Hutchins, Ashley McMahon, Hannah Onley, Tazmyn Stovell and Isabel Whitelaw.
The boy Gators stormed to their grand final with some huge qualifying round wins.
A 52-21 success against Swan Hill set up a great weekend, with a 10-point win against Echuca and a 20-point win against Wodonga to follow.
The Gators then defeated Whittlesea 38-20 to head into the decider as warm favourites, but fell at the final hurdle in a rematch against Wodonga.
