Goulburn Valley Hockey Association will run a junior twilight competition for the first time in the coming months.
The association has a senior version of the tournament, which begins after Christmas, but this will be its first venture towards running one aimed solely at the youngest players of the game.
‘‘We’ve never done it before for the juniors,’’ association junior president Anne Forster said.
‘‘We’re trying to entice new players to the sport, so anyone that wants to come along definitely come along.’’
A modified format, with seven players a side and no goalie on the pitch, should make for exciting contests across the competition, which Forster said would also help the association retain junior members.
‘‘We want to keep the young ones interested, there’s really nothing for hockey as a sport in summer, so we’re trying to make it more accessible,’’ she said.
‘‘Seven-a-side makes it very fast and more exciting as well.’’
Players can make their own teams or enter as individuals and be placed into a side, with Forster confident everyone involved will have plenty of fun.
‘‘It’s all for fun, it won’t be a really serious competition,’’ she said.
‘‘We’re aiming to get an under-11 to under-12 section and an under-13 to under-16 section up and running, as well as having a minimum of three girls per team to encourage them to play also.’’
The competition will start next Wednesday and run for eight weeks from 6.30pm, with interested players encouraged to phone Anne Forster on 0411887316 or head to the association’s Facebook page.
