It is no coincidence Steph Vick’s period of greatness has coincided with Kyabram’s back-to-back premiership wins.
The Bombers star was named most valuable player in yesterday’s grand final against Shepparton United to top off the perfect week.
On Monday night she was crowned the best player in the league again, having also been awarded the Wellman Family Medal last season.
While Vick was thrilled to receive the individual honour, she said it meant more to take home team glory.
‘‘The medal on Monday night is definitely zspecial, it’s now even more special,’’ she said.
‘‘This win was definitely my priority, it’s a team sport and I’ll do anything for those girls so now that we’ve got the win, I’ll just enjoy it.’’
Vick still had a major influence on the game, despite saying she did not perform to her own high standard.
‘‘It was a tough day actually, I felt quite flat out there, I guess I just had to stick to my systems and work hard, I’m very surprised (to receive the medal),’’ she said.
Having began the match playing against Kara Dawes, Bree Hanslow then became her direct opponent in the final term.
But again proving her standing as one of the fittest players in the GVL, Vick never looked tired as she consistently delivered the ball to where her shooters signalled for it.
Having spent most of the season well in front of their opponents, Vick said it was pleasing to see her teammates stand up when tested.
‘‘It’s all well and good to go from week-to-week and go without the pressure, but when you’re playing under pressure like this and there’s a big crowd and especially because it was close, you have to go with the glow of the game, the fact that we got the win (makes me proud of the girls),’’ she said.
Vick polled 39 votes in last season’s Wellman medal count, amassing 37 this year to again win the medal by a runaway total.
But she said this year the side had grown even further to remain undefeated.
‘‘It’s just unbelievable, I’m so proud of our team this year,’’ she said.
‘‘We’ve had a really big season, we’ve put everything into it, we knew we wanted to go back-to-back and it was a tight game so I’m so grateful we came out on top.
‘‘I think last season was a good taste of what it’s like and we wanted to come back definitely for round two and this year we went from strength to strength throughout the season.’’
