Josh Waight and Chris Judd will step into the head coaching roles at Shepparton Gators for the imminent Country Basketball League season.
Waight will take over from Matt Bartlett as coach of the men’s side having been his assistant last year, as Judd takes control of the Lady Gators again.
Bartlett will return to the court as Waight looks forward to being in charge of the side.
‘‘I spoke to Matt about it and he was more interested in playing and not coaching and I thought I suppose I might put my hand up,’’ he said.
‘‘I enjoyed it last week and it’s a good place to develop my coaching and it’s a good opportunity, so I thought I’d apply.
‘‘Hopefully he’ll (Bartlett) have a run around, he won’t play every game, but he’ll play a few.’’
Waight coached the under-16 VJBL team that made finals in the championship reserve competition, finishing top 20 in the state.
Tryouts for the men’s CBL side begin tonight with Waight hoping a few familiar faces will return.
‘‘It’ll be exciting, we’ll see what happens and see who comes and hopefully there’ll be a good little turn out and we can build on last year,’’ he said.
‘‘A few said they were keen to come back, but we’ll wait until (tonight) to see who’s there.’’
The men’s and women’s sides start their season against Wodonga at Shepparton Sports Stadium on October 14.
With the season fast approaching, Waight said the side might need a few games to warm back into the competition.
‘‘It’ll be full-on, we won’t be as prepared as we’d like to be at the start of the season, but it is what it is, we’ll try and develop and get better, make finals, and from there it’s anyone’s game, but we’re in it to win it,’’ he said.
Trials for the women’s team started on Sunday and will continue tomorrow night at Mercy Stadium.
