Kyabram boxer Ellie Fry, pictured with GV Boxing trainer Zedda Harrington, has claimed a Victorian title.

Kyabram’s Ellie ‘‘Ferocious’’ Fry is continuing to punch her way through state boxing competitions, recently claiming the Female Novice Victorian Title in the lightweight division (60kg).

While opponent Shiree Porter fought hard, Fry came out swinging, winning the novice state title in a unanimous points decision.

‘‘We had our plan mapped out and Ellie executed it. I was really happy with the pace,’’ Goulburn Valley Boxing Club coach and Fry’s mentor, Zed Harrington, said.

‘‘A lot of credit goes to her opponent — she made Ellie really earn it. We’d like to have another fight with her. It takes two to make a good fight, and we had a lot of respect for her.

‘‘She was pretty gutted about losing, but as I always say, ‘There are no losers in this sport — you either win or you learn’.’’

Fry started the three-round bout with a dominant first round, boxing neatly behind a good jab.

While the competition grew closer in rounds two and three as her opponent rose to the occasion, Ellie maintained a lead, scoring the final victory.

Harrington said Fry, 16, had gone from strength to strength since snatching a win at her first boxing bout in June.

‘‘Ellie has shown plenty of dedication and commitment since starting with me,’’ Harrington said.

‘‘The problem with boxing is the mental and physical demand. So many quit along the way, but I have full faith in Ellie.

‘‘If she maintains the way she is going, I believe her career can be big.

‘‘Her actions speak the loudest to me.

‘‘She wants it, there’s no quit in this young lioness.’’
