Gators’ comeback just falls short

Shepparton Gator Mitch Markby led the way for his side last Friday night with 23 points, but it was not enough to secure victory.

The Victorian Junior Basketball League season is over for the under-16 Shepparton Gators boys.

A long trip to Montmorency Secondary College to take on McKinnon in a Championship Reserve elimination final failed to bear fruit for Josh Waight’s charges, despite an astounding comeback late in the match.

The Gators were 17 points down at the last change before storming home with 28 points to 13 in the final term, falling just two points shy of forcing overtime in the cutthroat clash.

It was simply a case of too little, too late though for the Gators, who let the game slip in the second quarter when they conceded 22 points and scored just 11.

Mitch Markby once again led the scoring with 23 points, while Jordan Michel (14), Oscar Hide (seven) and Charlie Young (seven) also made good contributions.

In a fantastic team effort, every Gator was able to hit the scoreboard, with Josh Evans (four points), Will Dwyer (three), Hayden Brock (three), Tom Brown (two) and Isaac Dowling (two) doing their best to help out.

The Gators lost five matches in a row to finish the season on a disappointing note, but will be proud of their efforts in the top line metro competition.
