Gators need to find their mojo for finals

August 30, 2017

Shepparton Gators under-16 boys team heads into their finals campaign on the tail of five consecutive losses.

The under-16 Shepparton Gators will head into a Victorian Junior Basketball League Championship Reserve finals series without a win in their past five matches.

Josh Waight’s charges felt the full force of ladder-leader Eltham on Friday night, losing 27-74 in the final round of the regular season.

Oscar Hide led the way for the Gators with eight points, while Josh Evans (five points), Jordan Michel (five), Tom Brown (four), Charlie Young (three) and Hayden Brock (two) also hit the scoreboard in the large defeat.

The Gators do not have time to dwell on their poor finish, with a cut-throat elimination final scheduled against McKinnon this Friday night at a yet to be determined venue.

Waight’s troops will take plenty of confidence into the clash though, with their last victory coming against the Cougars (54-49).

●Shepparton export Maddie Garrick’s SEABL season with the Kilsyth Lady Cobras came to an end on Saturday night at the hands of the Geelong Supercats.

Garrick managed a team-high 19 points, as well as five rebounds, one assist and one steal from a full 40 minutes on court in the east conference final, but it was not enough as the Supercats took a 62-43 victory.

The Lady Cobras trailed at every change at Kilsyth Sports Centre, with a shooting percentage from the field of 23.3 (compared to the away side’s 43.1) contributing heavily to the defeat.
