Shepparton United Red and Mooroopna, pictured during a July round, will go head-to-head in the preliminary final showdown.

It has been an even season in the Shepparton District Junior Football League under-16 competition and Sunday’s semi-finals were no exception.

Shepparton United Red progressed to a preliminary final showdown with minor premier Mooroopna after winning a thrilling encounter against Shepparton Notre Gold by six points.

The Bears led by nine points at the final change, but the Demons restricted them to one behind in the last quarter to win 9.6 (60) to 8.6 (54).

Matthew Poppa, Bowen Calogero, Ethan McLaren, Jakob Butcher and Robert Mifka (three goals) starred for United Red, while Blaine Burke, Ethan Batey, Zak Wikman, Orien Kerr and Nicholas Healey battled hard for the Bears.

Kyabram Red held on to defeat Echuca White by 11 points as Riley Ironside booted four goals in a consecutive best-on-ground display.

The Murray Bombers’ poor kicking at goal cost them dearly as Kyabram Red won 8.6 (54) to 5.13 (43).

Lachlan Kerr, Jayden Fitzgerald, Connor Hawes, Daniel Anderson and Izac Ferguson backed up Ironside’s efforts for the Bombers, while Finlay Chivers, Senan McNulty, Matthew Lias, Will McGlone and Mitchell Wales were honourable in Echuca White’s defeat.

Kyabram Red will play Shepparton United Blue in this Sunday’s preliminary final, starting at 12.40pm, while the showdown between the Cats and Shepparton United will take place following that game.
