Tigers throw the key away

There were plenty of thrills and spills in the Goulburn Valley League under-18 competition on Saturday as teams vied for their place in the top six.

Rochester all but locked the top-six up in the Goulburn Valley League under-18 competition.

The Tigers went two games clear of Echuca in seventh after a sensational 10-point victory at Benalla Showgrounds against the third-placed Saints.

It was a tight contest for most of the game, with the visitors kicking four goals in the last term to prevail.

Riley Coghill, Joel Haitsma, Matthew Kellett, Nathan Kay (three goals), Charles Ward and Harrison McPhee led the way for Rochester, while the Saints’ best were Michael Ryan, Wade King, Riley Johnson, Corry Westbury, Jack McLean and Jack Seketa.

At Mansfield, the Eagles won their second game of the season with an upset 16-point victory over Euroa.

The home side rallied from 13 points behind at three-quarter time by kicking 5.8 to the Magpies’ 1.3 in the last term.

Josh Hamstead, Allister Bennett (three goals), Jack Christopher, Mason Spierings and Tom Sheahan were superb for the Eagles, as was Peter Cairns, Justin Davies (four goals), Jake Penman, Balin King and Max Smith.

Mooroopna was a comfortable 46-point victor over Shepparton Swans on Saturday.

The Cats kept the Swans goal-less in the first half and went on to prevail 11.5 (71) to 3.7 (25).

Ben Tenace, Broady Blackley-Dow, Cody Law, Lachlan Madgwick and Mitchell Chandler were standouts for Mooroopna, as was Brian Valoia, Lachlan McMahon, Mitchell Gravina, Jaxon Thomas and Harry Tonks for the Swans.
