Demons struggle to get out of Bear trap

July 11, 2017

Shepparton has pushed its Goulburn Valley League under-18 premiership potential with a 31-point win against arch rival Shepparton United on Saturday.

The second-placed Bears were too good for the reigning premier, winning every quarter in low-scoring battle to prevail 6.8 (44) to 2.1 (13).

Hugo Ingham, Charlie Boyer, Charlie Boyer, Tyler Bell, Spencer Small and Jack Nation starred for the Bears, while United’s top contributors were Jack Caia, Ryan Wenske, Hume Hurley, Ben McCluskey and Mitch McGrath.

The Demons are still in the hunt for a top two spot as they sit third on the ladder, only a game behind the Bears with a 9-3 record.

Benalla was too strong for Mooroopna, racking up a 67-point win as Patrick Bromley was on fire with five goals for the Saints.

Corry Westbury, Marcus O’Brien, Riley Johnson and Charlie Berthun led the way for Benalla, while Lachlan Madgwick, Jordan Formica, Broady Blackley-Dow, Lachlan Sykes and Rory Huggard were excellent for the Cats.

Tatura is on the verge of playing finals, only a season after not fielding an under-18 team.

The Bulldogs powered past Mansfield by 43 points on Saturday, with Brodie Sanders, Mason Farley, Callum Minutoli, Matthew Dodd, Ethan Moor and William Pyke in top form.

The Eagles were best served by Tom Sheahan, Joel Sanford, William Stow, Angus Murray and Jack Kirley.

Kyabram ran riot with a 120-point win against Shepparton Swans as the Bombers remain undefeated on top of the ladder.

Coby McCarthy, Rhys Carling, Dominic Watt, Ben Napier and Kane Sewell were superb for Kyabram, while Corbin Rowan, Zach Wild, Johnbosco Valoia, Zac Alderton and Harry Tonks were the Swans’ best.
