It was bound to happen and on Saturday Kyabram exposed the gap between the competition’s best and worst side.
The unbeaten reigning premier conceded just one goal — in the final quarter — in a 138-point demolition of the Shepparton Swans.
Kayne Pettifer (eight goals) and Kyle Mueller (six) kicked 14 goals between them as Hayden Gemmill returned with two of his own after recovering from osteitis pubis.
The Swans scored just one behind in the first and second quarters and were kept scoreless in the third term.
‘‘We played well again, we obviously went into the game expecting to win, but in the end I was just happy with how we went about it,’’ Newman said.
‘‘Our defence was fantastic, it stems from the team’s work up the field when our midfielders are able to do a little bit of two-way running.’’
The Bombers have conceded just 452 points in 12 games this season, with 181 of those points coming in the past five weeks.
Paul Griffiths knew his Swans side would be heading into a tough challenge, but he could not fault his side’s effort and commitment.
‘‘We knew we were up against it, all we wanted to do was match their workrate, it doesn’t take talent to work hard and crack into the contest,’’ Griffiths said.
‘‘I feel we maybe should have gotten a few more goals because I think the result didn’t do our effort any justice.’’
BJ Squire was yet again at his best racking up 39 disposals and 18 marks against a quality midfield.
‘‘He is a player I would have loved to have played with,’’ Griffiths said.
‘‘I have seen a lot of football in my time and I could not be any more prouder of his will and commitment to just continue on.’’
Nathan Terlich kicked the Swans’ first and only goal at the start of the final term, while Jared Service and Jayden Clarke, along with Squire, were their best.
