Squeeze applied after the first term

July 03, 2017

Josh Smith added four goals on Saturday to Merrigum's 76-point trouncing of Rushworth.

Merrigum absorbed a strong early challenge from Rushworth before powering to victory on Saturday.

The Tigers led at the first change, but could only manage another 1.3 for the rest of the contest as the home side took full control of the match.

Josh Smith was the star up forward for the Bulldogs with four majors, but he had plenty of help from his teammates.

Jack Sinclair, Josh Stammers and Dylan Rowney all slotted two goals in the 76-point victory, while Austin Bizzotto, Brad Power, Mitch Younger, Michael Donaldson and Tom Cooper also made their presence felt on the scoreboard.

However, Merrigum’s fourth straight win could have been by a much larger margin, with the Bulldogs booting 4.9 in the final term to waste some golden opportunities for more percentage.

Geoff Connally and Christian Barnett dominated across Merrigum Recreation Reserve, helping their side draw within a game of sixth-placed Lancaster.

For Rushworth, Rob Osborne was able to slot two goals to take his season tally to 60, while Jacob Perry and Regan Hanson also found a goal each in the loss.

Playing coach Jason Hucker led from the front, with Michael Telford, Shayne Lynch, Jeremy Lambden, Perry and Billy Wall also able to hold their heads high.

Merrigum has the opportunity to put even more pressure on Lancaster when it travels to Girgarre next week, while Rushworth faces a tough task against Violet Town.

The Tigers remain well off the pace in 10th on the ladder, already four games behind the Wombats and struggling to find victories.

In fact, Rushworth has lost seven games on the trot, with its last success coming on April 29 against Undera.
