Euroa gets better of shoot-out

June 21, 2017

Desperation: Mooroopna's Hannah Vibert lunges to prevent this shot from SYC as Cats goalkeeper Nicki Hutton prepares for action.

While the A-grade hockey teams were focused on Regional Hockey League action, B-grade teams took to both fields in Shepparton on Saturday.

Euroa and Mooroopna played off in the tightest women’s match of the round, with the former prevailing 5-4.

Rising star Steph Cardamone fought hard for Mooroopna, which nearly claimed its first win of the season.

Cardamone contributed a goal as did Sinduri Lyengar, with Josie Woods and Nicki Hutton important.

But through Britney White’s influence for Euroa a final breakthrough was made that allowed Euroa to lift off the bottom of the ladder, leaving Mooroopna in its place.

Shepparton Strikers were 5-1 winners against Shepparton Youth Club.

Placed third on the ladder and looking a finals contender alongside table toppers Echuca and Benalla, the Strikers made light work of their opponents.

Jessica Gavenlock finished off her teammates’ solid work to net four goals.

But while her supreme efforts in attack made her a valid member of the side’s best, Taya Hayes also spurred her side on to great heights.

The top two sides were pitted against each other to complete the round, with Echuca-Moama demolishing Benalla 9-0.

Courtney Thompson was in fine form with four goals for the River Rats.

In the men’s competition, Strikers and SYC could not be separated, despite being worlds apart in ladder positions.

Bottom-placed SYC took the game right up to its top-ranked opposition, with young ace Kyle Said leading the way for his side.

Matthew Deppler caused headaches for Euroa as he led Mooroopna to a 4-2 win.

Capping off a best-on-field performance with a goal, Deppler helped his side retain third spot on the ladder as Strikers and Benalla remain a force in the B-men competition.

The Saints knocked off Echuca 5-2, with Dane Hansted (three goals), Daniel Trevaskis and Evan Dowe all scoring in the win.
