Crows and Flames to battle for top spot

February 17, 2017

Goulburn Murray Cricket pits the top two sides against each other in the final round before finals.

Top spot is still up for grabs when Rochester United travels to Rushworth Recreation Reserve to meet Kyabram Fire Brigade.

The second-placed Flames can finish minor premiers with a win in a game that is a likely grand final precursor.

Both sides are coming off cruisy wins last round as United breezed past Echuca and the Flames did the same to Bamawm-Lockington United.

But there will be no free scoring for Fire Brigade against United.

Having played in a one-day match earlier in the season, plenty of Flames players made starts without pushing on to a big score for their side.

A third century for the season from Mark Watt would top off a solid home-and-away year for the Flames captain.

An outright win for Rochester Tigers against Stanhope last round did wonders for their chances of playing finals.

Just six points off a spot in the top four, the Tigers are looking to bump Moama off its perch this round.

The Tigers will have plenty of belief coming into the game off two straight wins, albeit against Echuca and Stanhope.

But after recovering from an early loss to Echuca, a consistent season from Moama has had it since only fall to the league’s top two sides.

With a strong top order, Moama should stave off a determined Tigers to keep its finals spot.

Controversial circumstances about Tongala’s playing of South African Carlo Scheepers had Cooma win last round’s game via forfeit. The Blues will be looking to finish the season on a positive note when they play Echuca, having not won since November.

Cooma will tune up for finals against Echuca South at home, with Stanhope playing Bamawm-Lockington United to complete the last regular season round.
