Missed penalty costs Suns

February 06, 2017

Fabrice Ebe scored the Suns’ first goal of the season.

Seven goals, a missed penalty and three yellow cards helped shape the Goulburn Valley Suns’ season-opening loss on Saturday night.

The Suns hosted fellow National Premier League club Springvale White Eagles in an entertaining match at McEwen Reserve, but in the end the travelling side left with all three points, winning 4-3.

The visitors struck first through Voji Milojevic, although a quick-fire double from the Suns gave the homeside the lead just after the half hour mark.

Fabrice Ebe scored the Suns’ first goal of the season before Scottish import Liam Baxter latched onto a defensive error to coolly slot home.

Celebrations were short-lived for the Suns as Milojevic scored again, this time from a corner.

Heading into half-time it looked as if the scores would remain 2-2, but Suns midfielder Shaun Kane had other ideas.

The veteran midfielder collected possession on the edge of the 18-yard box before unleashing a wonder strike into the top left corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

As the hour struck, so did the White Eagles, equalising yet again after a low driven cross was tapped home by Tapi Munyanyiwa.

Just moments later the Suns had a brilliant opportunity to retake the lead after Baxter was fouled inside the box.

The Suns were awarded a penalty and Baxter stepped up to take it, but his attempt sailed over the cross bar along with the Suns’ chances.

With only minutes left in the game, Suns winger Vlad Kosovac was stripped of position in the middle of the pitch before Damir Stoilovic found himself in the right place at the right time to complete the smash and grab job for the visitors.
