Murray Valley Cricket Association opened its Bendigo Country Week division one campaign with a dominant win against Ferntree Gully yesterday.
Murray Valley, who won division two last year, batted first to compile 5-212 from its 50 overs.
Deniliquin Rhino Andrew Hogan scored a swashbuckling 50 with six fours and a six, while Nathalia all-rounder Ash Quinn made an unbeaten 50 to anchor the innings.
Waaia’s Michael Mitchell also made a strong contribution at the top of the order, reaching 37 from 71 deliveries.
A strong bowling performance followed, with Murray Valley taking wickets at regular intervals to bowl Ferntree Gully out for 162 and a 50-run win.
Quinn once again starred, taking 4-67 from his 18 overs in a testament to his endurance and skill.
Nathalia team-mate Liam Evans also bowled magnificently, with 4-40 from 9.4 overs helping his side wrap up the tail inside 40 overs.
Goulburn Murray took on reigning division one premiers Gisborne and Districts and came away with a tight victory.
Goulburn Murray captain Adam Ward top scored after winning the toss and batting, making 31 of his team’s total of 139.
Ward then went on to lead the charge in his side’s bowling innings, taking 3-23 to complete an all-round performance and help rout Gisborne, out for 129.
Luke Deeprose also bowled well, chipping in with 3-33.
Murray Valley plays Gisborne, while Goulburn Murray meets Emu Valley today.
