Like a fine bottle of wine, Neville Laffy just seems to get better with age.
The Shepparton Cycling Club member won the 50-54 age category at the National Road Cycling Championships in Ballarat on the weekend.
On a challenging track, Laffy claimed a three second victory over John Watkinson in a 61km slug fest lasting 1:42.04.
‘‘It was a pretty tight race, going into the third lap there was three of us competing together, but in the end I was lucky enough to come away with the win,’’ Laffy said.
Neville has the Laffy bragging rights in the Gran Fondo championships after also beating his younger and more inexperienced brother Kevin.
Neville, who is 15 months older than Kevin and has more than six years of riding knowledge up his sleeve, believed it would not be too long before his brother surpassed him on the road.
Neville managed to pip his brother by almost 10 minutes on the hilly Buninyong track.
‘‘I won’t take this win for granted. He (Kevin) only started riding two years back and he will soon pass me,’’Neville said.
‘‘He’s a farmer and had to crop his harvest for the past month, so he missed out on a bit of training.’’
The Laffys were also joined by fellow Shepparton Cycling Club members, Bradley Higgins and Indi Michel.
Unfortunately, Michel was caught up in a crash and was forced to withdraw.
